Your sleep position, shifting during sleep, anatomy, extra weight, cardiovascular diseases: all are probable causes of snoring. Have you ever thought “Can allergies make you snore?” It turns out they can.

Today we’ll figure out how allergies affect your nasal and oral breathing systems, how do allergies make you snore and how to protect yourself against them.

Links between snoring and allergies

Having a respiratory allergy means trouble for your sleep. But how do allergies cause snoring?

A study of 5000 people who suffered rhinitis symptoms focused on a possible link between snoring and allergies. It found they were significantly more likely to be snorers, have a non-restorative sleep and experience excessive daytime sleepiness.

Allergy snoring is the result of nasal hypersensitivity or hyperactivity. It affects the nose and throat, preventing correct breathing through the nasal airway, and is often worse at night.

Can allergies cause snoring?

To get to know “Can allergies cause snoring?”, you should firstly think over how we breath when we sleep:

  1. Nasal allergies and snoring are the most popular and here’s why. Snoring depends on different factors but the nasal issues are one of the tops. When the nose is congested or affected by an allergy, air can’t flow through the nasal airway easily. Breathing in such a way makes the soft palate and uvula vibrate, so creating noise.
  2. Oral allergies causing snoring have the same effect, but on your throat. Usually, after eating certain products (fruits, nuts, milk), allergic reactions can cause the throat to swell and block airfow.

To know for sure “Do allergies cause snoring?” observe your sleep quality and reactions to dust particles, tobacco smoke, feather pillows, pet hair, indoor plants, flowers, perfumes, some household cleaners and paint smells.

How to prevent allergies snoring

The best advice on how to prevent snoring from allergies is to get rid of allergens. Sounds simple but you should know some rules:

  • Check your bedroom first. Take out all possible allergens from it.
  • Get pets sleep in another room.
  • Regularly wash sheets.
  • Use a humidifier. Snoring because of allergies isn’t one reason; it may be due to dry air.

It’s a base if you are ok using nasal passages or nasal strips.

Don’t forget about tracking your sleep. Goodsmnia Lab can help by recording your sleep, analyzing your snore and preparing a sleep report that you can show to a doctor.
